Why is NEET Required for Indian Students to study MBBS?

NEET—National Eligibility cum Entrance Test has been made mandatory for all medical aspirants intending to join Indian medical colleges to study MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BDS courses in India. Prior to 2019, every state government and a few prominent colleges of India conduct their own entrance exams to get admission into private and public medical colleges. Though, the proposal for a common entrance exam across India proposed in the year 2012 was finally implemented in the year 2019.

Is NEET mandatory to study MBBS in India?

Yes, NEET is a mandatory exam for all the medical aspirants to join Indian medical colleges. Candidates who have not qualified NEET examination are not eligible to participate in NEET counseling even for management and NRI quota admissions of any colleges of India.

Is NEET mandatory to study MBBS in Abroad?

NEET UG qualification is made mandatory for all those students who wish to pursue their medical course in other countries. Candidates who wish to get a medical registration from India need to have NEET qualification to get eligibility to appear for the Medical License Entrance Exam (FMGE / NEXT).

Students who wish to be admitted in medical colleges of other countries require NEET qualification subject to the qualifying marks of that year and reservation of the candidate. Candidates wishing to join MBBS coursed in abroad medical colleges need to get the eligibility certificate from the National Medical Commission. This eligibility certificate was issued to the students who qualified the criteria announced by NMC.

Why NEET become mandatory to get admission to study MBBS Abroad?

The main objective of NEET is to create a standardized and transparent system of admission for all medical and dental colleges in India. Prior to the implementation of NEET, each state had its own entrance exam, leading to a lack of uniformity in the quality of medical education across the country. The NEET exam ensures that students are selected based on their merit and ability to perform well on a standardized test, rather than on the basis of their state of origin or other factors.

NEET Eligibility Certificate Requirements

NEET eligibility certificate is issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to candidates who are not Indian citizens, overseas citizens of India, or non-resident Indian but wish to apply for undergraduate medical courses in India. And this eligibility certificate is also required for candidates pursuing MBBS or equivalent courses from medical colleges of other countries. To be eligible for the NEET eligibility certificate, a candidate must fulfill the following requirements: 

 

  • Citizenship: The candidate must be a citizen of a country other than India, an overseas citizen of India (OCI) or a non-resident Indian (NRI).
  • Age: The candidate should have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year of the MBBS/BDS course.
  • Educational Qualification: The candidate must have passed the qualifying examination (equivalent to 10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English. The minimum percentage of marks required for eligibility varies depending on the category of the candidate. 
  • NEET: The candidate must have qualified for the NEET exam with the required cutoff marks prior to admission to the 1st year of MBBS/equivalent course.
  • Valid passport: The candidate must possess a valid passport as proof of nationality.
  • Visa proof: Candidates must show the proof of the years of stay during the course duration at the country they have pursued the MBBS/equivalent course
  • Educational transcripts: Students must complete their course duration in colleges of abroad and submit all valid original documents certified by the college and country they have pursued their medical course
  • Course duration: To get the eligibility certificate from NMC of India, students should study MBBS/equivalent course not less than 54 of college and one year compulsory internship in the same country he/she pursued MBBS.
  • Internship: The candidate must have completed a one-year internship or practical training in a recognized hospital or medical institution in the same country of study. 
  • English taught program: Candidates must pursue their entire course in English taught program as mandatory any dual program of medical education is not valid to get eligibility to appear for medical licensure examination.
  • Medical registration: As per the latest NMC guidelines candidates completed their medical education in other countries must register in the country medical council as qualified doctors and submit the same proof.

Can I study MBBS without NEET qualification?

NEET has made it mandatory for any candidates who want to pursue their medical education abroad as per the given NMC guidelines. Students can pursue MBBS courses without NEET qualification, however they are not eligible to appear for the Medical licensure examination (FMGE / NEXT) of India to get registered in the Medical council of India.

Those candidates can practice medicine in other countries subject to qualification of the countries medical licensure requirements. The MBBS degree is valid in other countries however to get a medical license in India, candidates must qualify the given NMC norms including NEET UG qualification as mandatory.
